Training and Entry Requirements

In order to become an interior designer you need an eye for design and a good perception of spatial awareness. As well as these personal traits you will also benefit from having design qualifications.

Many successful interior designers are qualified to degree level or the national equivalent. This can be in interior design or a related subject such as 3D design or art and design. In order to enrol on a degree level design course you will first need to have obtained a foundation degree. Some degree courses may accept 2 A-Level passes or the equivalent such as a BTEC in art and design in lieu of the foundation degree.

Alongside the academic skills most interior designers share similar personal qualities which are part and parcel of the job and its development into a career. Essentially you need to be creative whilst also having a sense of realism to see your projects carried through on budget and on time. You will need a sound knowledge of different materials and products used in your designs and good communication skills to deal with suppliers as well as foremen and clients.

Daily Work

Interior designers either work alone as freelance designers or as part of design teams working for larger companies. Interior designers take on jobs from individuals and businesses to give premises a fresh look.

Freelance interior designers work independently and need to build relations with clients and businesses to maintain a steady stream of work. Strong organisational skills will be needed as well as a grasp of business procedures.Design Council Logo

Depending on the job being undertaken interior designers may need to work long hours and weekends. When working for businesses interior designers may need to work to deadlines in time for shop openings or preparing premises for launch parties and other functions.

Interior designers working for interior design consultancies usually spend most of their time working in an office or studio. Freelance interior designers may work from home or rent office space. A driving licence is usually required as designers will have to travel regularly to check progress on site and to meet clients.

Outlook and Future Prospects

Many interior designers start off working for a design company and progress building up skills and experience before setting up a freelance design company.

Designers may be able to expand their skills by taking additional courses in design and other related fields. This could either be via short courses at colleges or through private providers or specialist post graduate degrees and diplomas at university.

Designers can also join an accredited trade body to enhance their profile. These include the British Interior Design Association and the Chartered Society of Designers. These organisations will provide resources and guidance with issues and may also offer a continual development program.

This like many skills is something that will need to be continually reviewed to keep up to date with recent changes in the law.
